Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a herdshare?
A: A herdshare is where people buy share of a milking animal or herd, and pay the farmer to care for the animals and milk them. As owners, the shareholders are entitled to the milk from their animals. The only ways to obtain raw milk in Ohio are to join a herdshare or own a dairy animal.
Q: Can you explain more about the share?
A: For one share, you would pay $40 when you sign the contract; this is a one-time cost that gives you part ownership of the herd. This technically "buys" you a share of the dairy herd. You would also pay on that first day your monthly fee - this is sometimes called a boarding fee and pays us (the farmer) for taking care of, feeding, and milking your share of the herd. This entitles you milk each week as a dividend. Every four weeks, your boarding fee would be due. Share's go on a month to month basis. This gives you the option to try it out for just one month.
Also, our herd share program requires that you have your own half-gallon mason jars. You can bring your own half-gallon jars or if you do not have half gallon jars there is a $10 deposit per share (2 jars) .
Q: How often are shareholders supposed to pick up their share? Where is pick up located at and when?
A: Pick ups for shares are weekly. We have a option to pick up every 2 weeks for those further from the farm. We need to be able to find someone that we put opposite you though - contact the farm for arrangements, we will try our best to work something out. :-)
At this time pickups are at our family farm in Hartsgrove, OH (5928 Callahan Rd). We try our best make pickup times convenient for shareholders, some days we have hours, please reach out for current hours!
Q: What makes up your herd's diet?
A: Our goats graze on organic pasture in the summer and are fed a alfalfa/grass mix hay in the winter months. We feed a custom grain mix specifically formulated for our herds needs. We only feed grain while the animals are being milked, this is required to keep their weight up. We also supply an stock mineral, kelp, sodium bicarbonate and ample amounts of fresh water at all times.
